When Erickson Park in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, first opened, it featured open green space that was full of potential. Local residents began asking for something new - an inclusive, interactive feature that could be enjoyed by both children and adults. That’s when the idea of an outdoor musical playground began to take shape.
Local volunteer and fundraiser Ron Bakken led the charge. During his research, he discovered Percussion Play, the global leader in outdoor musical instruments.
“We came across Percussion Play and thought—holy cow, what a great concept! We wanted to create something fun, interactive, and lasting for the community,” said Ron.
What made this project stand out was the involvement of local school music teachers. Their expertise helped shape the final selection of instruments, ensuring they would be accessible, harmonious, and engaging for all ages and abilities. The teachers recommended the Quintet Ensemble, a perfectly balanced collection of outdoor instruments that includes:
Installation was straightforward, and the instruments were quickly embraced by the community. Ron recalls the joy of watching people interact with the new musical space:
“It is so fun to watch—people hear the sounds in the background, their ears perk up, and they smile. Then they go explore and try it for themselves.”
The musical instruments have become a beloved feature of Erickson Park. Children lead spontaneous jam sessions, parents join in the fun, and even veterans from nearby homes enjoy the opportunity to make music together. The space has become a hub for intergenerational play, creativity, and connection.
Despite initial concerns about working with an international company, Ron praised the experience:
“Working with Percussion Play was just terrific. I didn’t feel like I was dealing with someone on the other side of the world—it was so easy.”
He also highlighted the durability and craftsmanship of the instruments:
“We got a Cadillac product—exceptional, high quality, very durable. I can see these lasting a very long time with little or no maintenance.”
Thanks to community collaboration, expert input, and high-quality outdoor musical instruments, Erickson Park has become a vibrant, musical destination. The Quintet Ensemble has created a space where people of all ages and abilities can come together, explore sound, and experience the joy of music in the great outdoors.
