Scenic Regional Library Introduces Outdoor Musical Instruments to Several Branches Thanks to 'Friends of the Library' Funding
Scenic Regional Library has provided more than fifty years of access to books, audio-visual materials, and story times for communities across Missouri - and now, access to music.
Serving three counties through nine branches, the Union branch was the first to introduce outdoor musical instruments, expanding the library’s role as a creative and inclusive community hub.
The library has undoubtedly come a long way from its creation as a bookmobile service in 1957, and we hope more libraries in its region will be able to benefit from the joy of outdoor musical instruments.
Outdoor Musical Play Supporting Early Learning in Missouri’s Library Spaces
When a new building was developed for the Union branch, it included a dedicated children’s area focused on developing pre-literacy skills. Having discovered Percussion Play instruments at an event several years earlier, the library board was inspired to create an outdoor musical space that everyone could enjoy.
Funding from the Friends of the Library made it possible to purchase the first set of instruments - a Soprano Quartet Ensemble comprising the Cadenza, Small Babel Drum, and Soprano Pentatonic Freechimes.
Inclusive Music-Making for All Ages and Abilities
The instruments are enjoyed by library users of all ages, from young children to elderly patrons. The All Abilities Rainbow Center, which supports adults with learning difficulties, regularly visits the library to play the instruments.
“We loved the children’s area; we went and played all the instruments which we thought were great!” they shared.
Christy Schink, Associate Director of Youth and Outreach Services Librarian, says the instruments have become a much-loved focal point. “It’s so lovely to hear chimes outside. The sounds created by children playing provide a pleasant background noise. There were concerns about volume, but the sound doesn’t carry, and we all enjoy the gentle chimes.”
Expanding Outdoor Music Across Library Branches
With branches spread across the tri-county area, more communities are set to benefit. The Wright City branch is scheduled to receive Freechimes and a pair of Congas, while the St. Clair and Hermann branches have recently installed instruments on their outdoor children’s patios.
From its beginnings as a bookmobile service in 1957, Scenic Regional Library has continued to evolve, bringing learning, creativity, and the joy of outdoor music to the communities it serves.
