Syracuse Sound Stops: A Collaborative Public Music Initiative

The Syracuse Sound Stops project began as a creative partnership between Symphoria, Central New York’s professional orchestra, and the Connective Corridor, a public-private initiative linking Syracuse University with downtown’s business and arts districts. Over time, the collaboration expanded to include the Everson Museum of Art, SU’s Setnor School of Music, the City of Syracuse, and Onondaga County.

Together, these organizations aimed to transform downtown Syracuse into a vibrant, collaborative, and culturally rich environment—making it a more enjoyable place to live, work, and visit.

Public Music Installations for Community Engagement

With support from a Regional Economic Development Council grant, Symphoria curated a selection of outdoor musical instruments designed for public use. These installations are part of a broader effort to enhance the Creative Corridor and promote community engagement through music.

In a public statement, Mayor Stephanie Miner praised the initiative:

“The durable instruments that are free to use in public spaces make the gift of music accessible to the community. I’m glad we’re able to work with our partners to enhance our streetscape and put music into the hands of more people.”

Interactive Musical Instruments for All Ages

The installations include a variety of inclusive and accessible outdoor instruments such as:

These instruments are designed for year-round use, require no musical training, are family-friendly, and are ADA accessible. They create a harmonious soundscape that encourages spontaneous play and musical exploration.

Catherine Underhill, Managing Director of Symphoria, highlights the joyful impact of the project:

“These instruments create a playful atmosphere in the city. They’re the frosting on the cake of all the work that’s gone into making the Creative Corridor a real asset for Syracuse.”
