At just 15 years old, Paige Thomas has composed more than a melody—she’s created a legacy. As a Gold Award Girl Scout, Paige took on a project that would not only challenge her leadership skills but also transform the lives of thousands of campers at the Rotary Club Youth Camp in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. Her mission? To build a percussion playground that would be accessible to all, especially children with disabilities. With inclusivity at the heart of her design, Paige brought her vision to life through community support, creativity, and determination.
The result is a vibrant musical space featuring instruments like a Rainbow Cavatina, Rainbow Sambas, Tropical Cyclone, and Rainbow Chimes —each chosen for their accessibility and sensory appeal. “The best thing about a percussion park is everyone can do this,” Paige said.
The Rotary Youth Camp serves thousands of children each year, including those with disabilities. Paige’s project ensures that every camper has the opportunity to explore music in a safe, inclusive environment.
Camp Superintendent Laurie Mozley shared how the instruments have become a powerful emotional outlet for campers: “These musical instruments give them a way to express big emotions and bring them to a calmer center.”
The playground opened in March and has already served hundreds of campers, including those attending “Girls Can Camp,” a program for girls with disabilities and their friends.
Paige, now a counselor-in-training, continues to inspire campers like Rose Williams, who said, “I love the music Paige made with these—because it makes a beautiful sound.”
Paige’s project is a testament to the power of youth-driven change. Through music, she’s created a space where every child can feel heard, included, and joyful—proving that even small projects can make a big difference.
