Nestled in Utah's historic Emigration Canyon, Camp Kostopulos (Camp K) has been enriching the lives of people with disabilities since 1953. Dedicated to creating inclusive opportunities for recreation, connection, and personal growth, the camp recently enhanced its outdoor spaces with Percussion Play musical instruments, giving participants new ways to explore creativity, self-expression, and collaborative play.
For more than 70 years, Camp K has provided accessible outdoor experiences that empower individuals of all ages and abilities. Set amongst stunning natural surroundings, the camp features a fishing pond, sports court, outdoor kitchens, trails, and activity areas designed to make the outdoors welcoming and engaging for everyone.
The camp was founded by a generous Greek immigrant who arrived in the United States in 1929. Recognizing the limited recreational opportunities available to people with disabilities at the time, he established Camp K with a vision of creating a place where everyone could experience adventure, friendship, and a sense of belonging.
Today, Camp K's President & CEO, Mircea Divricean, proudly continues the founder's mission.
During a conference, Camp K's team discovered Percussion Play's outdoor musical instruments - a moment that marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the camp. The team was immediately drawn to the instruments' vibrant colors, striking designs, and exceptional durability. More importantly, they recognized how outdoor music making could support their commitment to providing inclusive, multisensory experiences that everyone could enjoy. The instruments offered participants a new way to engage with the outdoors while encouraging creativity, communication, and self-expression.
Following the installation, the response from campers and visitors was overwhelmingly positive. Mircea Divricean, President & CEO, Camp Kostopulos, tells us:
By combining music, nature, and play, Camp K has created an environment where participants can explore sound, collaborate with others, and enjoy meaningful shared experiences. The intuitive, accessible design of the instruments encourages independent participation, allowing everyone to join in with confidence.
The installation includes: Rainbow Sambas, Rainbow Cavatina, Harmony Bells, Sunflower Petal Drum, Liberty Bells, Tropical Cyclone, Rainbow Chimes, Penta Post
These instruments have become a valuable addition to the camp's recreational offering, helping to create moments of joy, discovery, and connection for participants of all abilities.
More than 70 years after opening its doors, Camp K continues to expand its programs, facilities, and adaptive opportunities. The addition of Percussion Play's outdoor musical instruments reflects the camp's ongoing commitment to creating enriching experiences that foster participation, creativity and wellbeing. Just as Camp K's founder envisioned in 1953, the organization remains dedicated to ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
What began as one man's dream has evolved into a vibrant community resource where people of all abilities can connect with nature, build confidence, and experience the joy of making music together.
