Literature, Nature and Music - A Library's Mission to Support Outdoor Programming

Transforming Green Space into a Musical Oasis at Hendrick Hudson Free Library

Nestled in the heart of Montrose, New York, the Hendrick Hudson Free Library has long been a hub of innovation and community engagement. Built in 1997, this modern facility has consistently evolved to meet the needs of its patrons—offering everything from electric vehicle charging stations to robust recycling initiatives. But in recent years, the library set its sights on a new frontier: its expansive and underutilized front garden.

Recognizing the potential of this beautiful green space, Library Director Jill Davis envisioned a way to blend nature, creativity, and community. The first step? Music.

A Garden with Purpose

The transformation began with the creation of a water garden, designed to capture and filter rainwater from the library’s roof. This sustainable feature not only enhanced the landscape but also laid the groundwork for a more immersive outdoor experience.

Inspired by the garden’s tranquility, Jill sought to create programming that would draw people outdoors and deepen their connection to the natural world. Her answer came in the form of outdoor musical instruments from Percussion Play.

Creating a “Music Garden”

With a vision to make music accessible and joyful for all ages, the library installed a vibrant collection of instruments, including the Penta Post, Rainbow Bongos, and Sunflower Petal Drum. These colorful additions not only brought visual charm to the garden but also invited spontaneous music-making and exploration.

Soon after, the library received a heartfelt donation to honor a local father and daughter who shared a love of music. With this generous gift, the Rainbow Cavatina was added to the garden, creating a meaningful and melodic tribute.

A Community in Harmony

“The instruments have truly transformed our outdoor space,” says Jill. “It’s marvelous to see patrons of all ages engaging with them. The sounds are calming, the atmosphere is welcoming, and it’s become a real draw for families and individuals alike.”

The success of the music garden inspired the library to expand its programming. Storytime sessions now incorporate music-themed books, encouraging children to connect literature with rhythm and sound. These outdoor programs have become a cornerstone of the library’s mission to blend education, creativity, and environmental stewardship.

Looking Ahead

Buoyed by the community’s enthusiastic response, the Hendrick Hudson Free Library is already planning to expand its musical offerings and outdoor events. “Our music garden has become a symbol of what libraries can be—dynamic, inclusive, and deeply connected to the communities they serve,” Jill reflects. “We’re excited to see where this journey takes us next.”
