Inspired by Faith, Brought to Life Through Music
Lakeland Reformed Church has embraced outdoor musical play at its Daycare and Preschool, creating a joyful, faith-inspired space where children and the wider congregation can come together through music.
Located in Vicksburg, Michigan, the church recently expanded its popular Music Wall with a wall-mounted set of Percussion Play Rainbow Chimes. The Music Wall was inspired by Psalm 100 - “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord” - a message that helps bring faith, play, and community together in one shared space.
"We know God smiles when He hears us!" says Cindy Palmer, Director of Lakeland Creative Beginnings Daycare and Preschool.
A Music Wall Rooted in Joyful Worship
Today, children, families, and members of the congregation all enjoy creating music together outdoors, strengthening connections through shared musical experiences guided by faith.
The outdoor musical instruments are inclusive, meaning people of all ages and abilities can come together to play and participate. This shared experience reflects the church’s commitment to welcoming everyone and encouraging joyful expression through music.
Inclusive Outdoor Musical Play for All Ages
For children, making music outdoors alongside older generations supports the development of social skills, communication, emotional processing, confidence, and cognitive ability. These benefits arise from the powerful combination of hands-on music-making and learning with people outside of their immediate peer group.
Such experiences are especially valuable during the formative early years, helping children grow into balanced, socially confident, and emotionally aware young people.
Supporting Child Development Through Music and Movement
The Rainbow Chimes are tuned to harmonious pentatonic notes, making it easy for children to create pleasant music straight away. Playing the chimes helps develop rhythm, coordination, and fine motor skills, while their size and bright colours make them particularly appealing and accessible for early years settings such as preschools and kindergartens.
Play is essential to children’s development, and outdoor play is particularly important. Enhancing Lakeland’s outdoor space with musical instruments was therefore a natural progression.
Palmer explains, “We recognize the value of musical experiences and how they accelerate brain development in language and literacy. Research also tells us that children who learn to keep a rhythm or steady beat often improve in math skills.”
Multi-Generational Play That Builds Connection
The Music Wall has quickly become a much-loved feature across the church community, encouraging creativity, learning, and shared moments of joy between generations.
“We absolutely love the instruments added to our playground. So many children aged 3 to 100 have enjoyed making music outside!” says Palmer. “They are instilling a newfound love for music in some while encouraging others to develop their skills. The tone of the Rainbow Chimes is so real it sounds like church bells when played. By far the best update we have made to our outdoor space!”
“Music speaks to us - mind, body, and spirit.”
Encouraging Outdoor Musical Play in Church Settings
Jody Ashfield, Founder and CEO of Percussion Play, adds, “It’s never been more important to encourage children’s outdoor play, and we are thrilled to see churches such as Lakeland Reformed Church embrace outdoor musical instruments. It’s wonderful to see music inspired by faith bringing people together while supporting children’s development.”
